Video Excerpt – Writing and Self-Publishing

Last Friday morning, Robert Pasick, Ph.D., and I spoke at Leaders Connect, a networking event at Zingerman’s Roadhouse in Ann Arbor. Our topic was “Ten Steps to Meaningful Goals for 2017,” based on our recent book Self-Aware: A Guide for Success in Work and Life.

If you’re interested, you can watch the entire hour-plus of video on YouTube here.

I thought I’d share a quick video excerpt here, about three minutes of Rob and I chatting about how we collaborated on the book.

  • Greenovation TV (green #8)

Ever wanted to know how to renovate your home the green way? For the DIY earth friendly homeowner, the folks at Greenovation.TV want to show you how. It’s a website and a media channel, launching Earth Day April 22.

They’re available online 24/7. What’s even cooler is they’re local here in Ann Arbor, in my neighborhood!

Greenovation.TV‘s Matt Grocoff will speak on “greening a historic home” at 7:30 on April 23 in the Bach School multi-purpose room. Matt reports that he pays in a year what many pay a month for utility costs since doing some updates to their Old West Side Ann Arbor home. I wish I could make it, but I will be traveling that day. I look forward to tuning into the channel as it grows!

You can find out more in Concentrate’s feature article on GreenovationTV.

  • Going to Podcamp Michigan!

So, just the other day, with some of my Michigan Usability Professionals Folks, I was wondering about local social media folks that I hadn’t yet met. You know, wondering about who might be good speakers to invite to talk to us, that kind of thing.

I didn’t even tweet it, though I should have. But, I did find, in my inbox this morning, a twitter notification from, of all things, Podcamp Michigan. Ask and ye shall receive. Or, in this case, “receive even though the ask was inchoate and unarticulated.”

A podcamp is an unConference focused on blogging, podcasting, and social media. Should be fun. I’m planning to attend. You?

  • Local Ann Arbor treats power party (gratitude #19)

A photo of people attending a party.
The group at the bridal shower.

Jointly with the mother of the bride, I hosted a bridal shower for a friend this Saturday. The bride’s mom called me from New York and said she wanted to throw a party, but needed “support on the ground”. So, I agreed to pull together a guest list and host.

I had a lot of fun picking out and picking up the party food. I stopped at 4 stores, 3 of which were in walking distance of my home. Technically the 4th (Busch’s on South Main Street) was also in walking distance, but I didn’t leave enough time for the trip. Here’s the menu:

What fun to spend a beautiful spring day walking through the neighborhood to gather treats for the party!

  • Internet User Experience 2008 (gratitude #14)

This week is the Internet User Experience conference, a conference spotlighting methods for dramatically improving today’s web site user experience. I attended the conference last year and gained a lot from listening to my colleagues in other usability, web design, and human factors companies locally and globally. I was grateful for the things I learned that were new, the things I learned I wasn’t wrong about, and for the people I met and got to know better.

This year, I’m excited to return for a day and a half of presentations, inspiration, networking, and learning.

  • Winter photography class at Matthaei Botanical Garden

I very much enjoyed today’s Winter Photography Class at Matthaei. It was taught by Mark O’Brien. We had a little bit of instruction and then all went out and wandered together in the winter woods, playing with exposure, watching our batteries drain exceptionally fast, shivering a bit, and having fun. At the end of the day, it was 11° F, -12° C. Mark has some nice photos from the event on his Flickr, including this one which has me in it so it is my favorite.
